Jon Chase was the Brand Manager for Famous Stars And Straps for 5 years. From the stickers, ads, posters to the clothing you saw, he was responsible or played a key part in the creation.

After a couple of freelance works with DC Shoes, Joker Brand, Soul Assassins, Young and Reckless, etc, Jon now enjoys designing for his own brand, DSTROYR.
DCシューズやジョーカーブランド、ソウルアサシンズやヤング・アンド・レックレスなどの主要ストリートブランドのデザイン経験も持つジョンは、これまでの経験と持てる能力を新ブランドに注ぎこむ。 ブランド立ち上げとともにショップもオープンさせたジョンにインタビューした。
I was an assistant artist for Famous Stars and Straps for a while, and I became the only artist for them for two and half years, so I did everything you saw at the time, ads to all the clothes, I worked on it.
――自己紹介をお願いできる？
最初はアシスタント・アーティストとしてフェイマス（フェイマス・スターズ・アンド・ストラップス）に入ったんだ。 しばらくしてメインのアーティストが辞めてから、2年半の間ボクがただ一人のアーティストだった。 洋服のデザインはもちろん広告からステッカーまで、すべてボクがやっていたんだ。
The business was good, so we
started moving buildings, the company started becoming bigger and bigger, so we
were hiring lots of people; and by 2007, it started to really get to me,
because I was working a lot of hours and a lot of stress. I wasn’t doing art work anymore, I was managing.
I was more of manager position than an artist, so I was doing a lot of
meetings, emailing, networking and finding artists. And then the company started to get large
enough that it wasn’t what it was. It got large, more people came along,
it became different, and I didn’t think it was right for me. February
2008, I quit Famous. I don’t ever regret working there, I learned a lot,
I got to work with some of the greatest people I've ever met and some of the
most talented people ever, so it was a great experience.
――ファイマスといえばオーナーはセレブリティ（トラヴィス・バーカー）だし人気もある。 なんで辞めちゃったの？
ビジネスはうまく行っていた。 オフィスも新しいところに引っ越して会社は成長していたんだ。 だけど、2007年頃かな、とにかく仕事ばっかりしていて、疲れとストレスが限界に達していた。 アートワークじゃなく、マネージメントにさく時間が多くなってきていたんだね。 ボク自身の仕事も打ち合わせやEメール、コネクション作りなどが多く、アーティストというより管理職みたいになっていた。 会社も大きくなっていて、昔みたいなフィーリングも無くなってしまったんだ。 なにか違うな、と感じ2008年の2月に辞めたんだ。 フェイマスではたくさんの素晴らしい人たちと出会え、たくさんの才能のある人たちと働けて、とてもよい経験だったよ。
――Tell us about DSTROYR.
The reason DSTROYR has been
started is… because I wanted to do a blog to talk about art and art community
in Riverside, because there was some cool stuff going on in out here. And
what happened was I made a t-shirt design to help promote the website. Then I
realized I like making design and t-shirt for myself, because I've doing stuff
for other people for so long. I thought this
is what I wanna do so I started doing all the designs for myself, so for one
week, I had like twelve designs already.
――【DSTROYR】（デストロイヤー）について教えてくれる？
実はDSTROYRはブログから始まったんだ。 ボクはリバーサイドに住んでいるんだけど、この周辺のアートやアート・コミュニティに関するブログを始めて、そのサイトをプロモートするためにTシャツを作ったんだ。 Tシャツをデザインしている時、自分自身のためにデザインする事の楽しさに気付いてしまったんだ。 もう何年も人のためにデザインしてきたからね。 これが自分のやりたいことだと気づき、ブランドを始めたんだ。

――じゃあDSTROYRはウェブサイトをプロモーションするところから始まったと？
そう、アートについてのブログのプロモーションで。
Now it's all the stuff I like. I like the old school drag stars, I like gassers, I like guns, whatever I like. I’m not really following trend, maybe a little bit of that. It’s just I do what wanna do with it.
――スゴイね！ それが今じゃホットロッドやマッスルカー、自動車業界の連中に人気のブランドだもんね。
自分が好きなモノばっかりモチーフにしてるからね。 昔のドラッグレーサーやガッサー、銃だとかね。 トレンドを追おうとはしてないんだ、少ししかね。 やりたい事をやってるだけ。
――How did you come up with the brand
name DSTROYR?
Because I listen to Kiss record Destroyer
a lot. I'll be in Kiss mode and I'll listen to those records for
like 3 month and I just keep designing.
――ブランド名のDSTROYRはどこから？
KissのDestroyerのアルバムが好きだから。 Kissモードに入ると、３ヶ月くらい同じアルバムを聴いてデザインに没頭するんだ。
――I thought you took the name from
the kind of a battleship.
I had a list of about 40 names, and a ship was on there. If you look at the some of the original art works I had, there's a battleship in it actually.
――戦艦から取ったのかと思ったよ。
ブランドを立ち上げる前、４０個くらい名前を考えてね。 いくつかのアートワークの中には戦艦もあったよ。
I'm from South Bay and I live in
Riverside since 13.
――どこ出身なの？
サウスベイ生まれで、13歳からリバーサイドに住んでるよ。
I started high school at Hawthorne
high, I took 2 month with Mr. Williams, art teacher there, and that's the
same art teacher my mom had when she was in high school. He was a
gangsta. I learned more from that guy in two month than I probably
learned in my entire life. He's that good of a teacher. He was
awesome. I got some art there, and I came out here (Riverside), so I was
skateboarding, and listening to punk rock and heavy metals and things like
that, and I kinda gave up on art. The
teacher I had on my art class was mean. Me and my friend were drawing in
the class and she told us that we were horrible and we are never gonna do
anything with art. So I quite doing art
work in freshman year of high school. I just went to school and started
playing music. It wasn’t
until after I graduated high school, I started getting back in to art
again. So for those 4 years, I didn’t do any art
――アートにはいつから興味を持ったの？
ホーソーン高校に通っていた時、ウィリアムス先生の美術の授業を２ヵ月取ったんだ。 お母さんが高校の時に取った先生と同じ先生。 この人がすごい人でさ。 一生分をこの２ヵ月で学んだ感じ。 とにかく素晴らしい先生だったんだ。 で、それからリバーサイドに引っ越しをして、スケボーやパンクロック、ヘビーメタルにハマッてね。 アートは、美術の先生から「お前らの絵はダメだ。 一生アート関係の仕事には就けないだろう」って言われてから、やめちゃったんだ。 高校１年の時だね。 それから音楽にハマッて、バンドを組んだりしていた。 高校を卒業してからかな、またアートをやりだした。 高校４年間は全くアートはやっていなかったんだ。

――趣味はなに？
デザインをしたり、ゲームをしたり、音楽を聴いたり、奥さんと遊んだり。
Definitely. You can see it
by looking at my art work. When I get into a project, when I get into a
design, I will live that design.
――趣味と仕事に関係はある？
もちろんだよ。 ボクのデザインを見ればわかるだろう。 プロジェクトが立ち上がると、そのデザインになりきるんだ、そのデザインで生活するんだよ。 例えば今フェラーリのプロジェクトをやっているんだけど、実はそれまで全く興味がなく全然詳しくなかったんだ。 だけど、今は毎日フェラーリ中心の生活をしてるから、相当くわしくなったよ。
I have a Nitro and ‘67 Chevy Nova which I have for 21 years, my first car.
――クルマは何に乗ってるの？
67年のシェビー・ノバ。 もう21年乗ってる。 初めて買ったクルマなんだ。
――What kind of mods did you do to the Nova?
350 Small Block Chevy, 4 bolt main
Forged crank, Stock rods, Dished pistons, Roller rockers, Comp Cams, Holley
Super Charger carb, 2.02 / 1.60 iron fuelie camel hump heads pinned studs, Noisy
gear drive, Milodon pan with Weiand 142 roots blower boosting 5 psi. with

turbo 350 trans with B&M Pro Ratchet Shifter, Ididit tilt steering column, TCI
front clip, 10 Bolt 8.2 with Eaton posi 3.73 gears with axles and TA girdle, Caltrac
bars set up for the street, American Racing Torque Thrust II 17 x 7 - 225x50 up
front, Weld Draglites 15 x 8 - 235x60 out back - really wanna get TTs for the
back to match. One day it will happen and 6" fiberglass cowl hood

350スモールブロック、鍛造クランク、ストック・ロッド、ディッシュド・ピストン、ローラー・ロッカー、コンプ・カム、ホーリー・スーパーチャージャー・キャブ、MSDエレクトロニクス、ロン・フランシス・ワイヤリング、B&M・プロ・ラチェット・シフター、アメリカン・レーシングとウェルド・ドラッグライツのホイールなどで400馬力くらい出してるよ。
I don’t know. I guess its weird, I
feel like there's a connection between the driver and the car. You get into the
car, you really have fun driving it, and it takes you to a different
place. Freedom of driving. If it performs, it's even better. I
love wheels that go as fast, as loud and as crazy. it’s the greatest
thing of all time.
――クルマ好きだね。 クルマの何が好き？
なんだろうな。 変かもしれないけど、ドライバーとクルマの関係が好きだね。 クルマに乗ってさ、運転する。 すごく楽しいだろう。 どこかへ連れて行ってくれるんだ。 場所を移動するって事だけじゃなく、こう、運転する自由さっていうかな。 ハイパフォーマンスなクルマならベターだね。 ボクは速くて、うるさくて、クレイジーなクルマが好きなんだ。 そんなクルマが最高だよ。
Other people asked me the same
question, but I have hard time answering that for some reason. I like the
way cars are, I listen to the music to get inspired, cause a lot of my art work
comes through music. Well, how do YOU
answer to that question?
――ジョンはクルマとファッション、音楽が好きでしょ？ Tokyo Drive Magazineのコンセプトと全く同じなんだけど、この三つの関係についてはどう思う？
他の人にも同じ質問をされたことがあるんだけど、うまく答えられなかったんだ。 クルマは好きだし、インスピレーションを得るために音楽を聴く事もあるし。 特にボクのデザインの多くは音楽から影響を受けているから。 うーん、ケンタはその質問にどう答えるの？
――Well for me, driving a nice car is
not enough. I wanna be driving a nice car, listening to dope beat and
wearing fresh gear.

――ボクは、ただ運転するだけじゃ物足りないんだ。 カッコいい服を着て好きな音楽を聴きながらドライブしたい。 全部が揃ってはじめて調子が出るんだ。
